Céline Brault, Community Manager at KPN API Store

The KPN Healthcare Messenger is a real-time messaging platform specifically designed for the healthcare industry. It is a secure API to help you build meaningful patient experiences into your apps.

Why healthcare messaging?

While Healthcare Messenger is designed for the Dutch healthcare sector, we can see the importance of clear communication by looking at our near neighbours. For example, the UK’s national health service could save around £1 billion per year by improving communication between patients and practitioners. And, of course, it’s not just about money. Patient outcomes are improved when communication improves.

The KPN Healthcare Messenger API solves the problems associated with poor communication between medical professionals and patients. It does this in two ways: there’s a REST API that’s mostly suited to asynchronous communication and then a real-time gateway that’s ideal for instant-messenger style communication.

The unique challenges of healthcare messaging

It doesn’t get much more personal than information about our health. As a developer building communication tools for the healthcare industry, you need to ensure that your app meets security and privacy best practices and, of course, that it complies with the GDPR.

Healthcare Messenger handles that for you in 2 ways:

  • First up, Healthcare Messenger complies with Dutch healthcare industry privacy standards and the GDPR. But we went further than just meeting the standards. In building Healthcare Messenger, we took advice from healthcare professionals to understand what types of communication have the most significant impact on patient experience.
  • Secondly, Healthcare Messenger is covered by KPN’s healthcare industry certification, meaning that you won’t need to seek your own certification for the communication aspects of your app.

Unlike generalist communication platforms, Healthcare Messenger is tailored specifically for Dutch healthcare use cases. And, speaking of use cases, what are some of things you might build with Healthcare Messenger?

Working with Healthcare Messenger

So, what might you build with Healthcare Messenger? Let’s look at some examples:

Virtual waiting rooms

A patient’s healthcare relationship with a medical professional begins the moment that their appointment is confirmed. With Healthcare Messenger, you can build virtual waiting rooms that enable patients and practitioners to communicate with each other in the days leading up to an appointment. Practitioners can seek supplemental information and the health professionals can start to build rapport that may save time during the appointment itself.

Post-appointment follow-up

Following many medical appointments, a medical practitioner will need to share results with the patient. Giving results over the phone can cause confidentiality problems. Asking patients to come back to the medical facility costs the patients time and puts extra burden on staff. Sharing results through the GDPR-compliant Healthcare Messenger would provide a confidential method that saves time and money.

Remote in-home visits

For patients who can’t leave home, an in-home visit from a medical practitioner is often the only option. However, using Healthcare Messenger a medic could 'visit' patients in their homes without having to leave the office. For non-urgent visits, this could provide a level of care that would otherwise be unavailable.

Beyond healthcare

Healthcare Messenger is designed specifically for healthcare use cases in the Netherlands, but those needs also make it ideally suited to other scenarios where secure, private communication is paramount. With its simple interface, robust security, and well-documented endpoints, you can use Healthcare Messenger’s APIs to build messaging into pretty much any software.

We’ll be sharing more with you about Healthcare Messenger over the coming weeks, including specifics on how other developers are using it to create rich, secure messaging that serves both patients and medical professionals.
